Fifth and Final Round

Last week Neil had his testing and followed up with the doctor yesterday. She gave him the go-ahead to start the last round of chemotherapy. This time he’ll get stronger drugs which will cause stomach upset. He receives medicine that help counter the effects of the chemotherapy.

We’ve gained much knowledge about various medications and Neil’s body reactions through this process. I know now to only buy small quantities of groceries for Neil. His taste changes drastically from day-to-day. One small joy has been an unrestricted diet. He’s encouraged to eat anything he wants – no more counting calories, carbs, sodium and sugar. That’s very freeing and has worked for him. Neil’s weight is about the same as it was a year ago.

Today is the first of 4 days of chemotherapy. Next Tuesday he’ll receive a transplant of some of his stem cells and then is monitored each day to follow his counts (white blood cells, platelets, hemoglobin and others) till they return in approximately three weeks.

So we carry on in faith and hope, taking each day as it comes.
